So I am in need of a change. It just feels like a should do something bold. See image above. I am embarking on the idea of dying my hair from platinum blonde - and I mean platinum to a deep, deep, deep brown.

What do you think? I am thinking of doing this only for the fall and going back to my blonde hair by spring. Have you gone from platinum blonde to another color?

I think I will look cool, but you never know...

I know things are rough out there. The stock market continues to tumble and people are scared and losing their homes and jobs, but I do believe in the idea of staying positive. Believe me, I have my worries, as a business owner and a "one man" shop, it can get rough sometimes. However, I have to remember that we are all blessed in certain ways and we have to look at the "fun" or "happiness" that life still has for us.

"Tis the season...

I'm Back {Manners}

So I was scouring the blog world and came upon EmilyStyle - love the blog. She also just got married, so congratulations!

She has a great post on how to dress for a wedding, and since I have a few to attend in the upcoming year, I think this is a good guide.

Brunch wedding - This includes lunch weddings too. A light cotton dress or a skirt and sweater would be perfect for this. Aim for something you might wear to church on Easter. Men should wear slacks and a collared shirt or light colored sweater.

Garden wedding - Also backyard or other outdoor wedding. The keys here are sunblock, layers and flats. Go with a pretty dress in a bright color and pair it with a pair of flats or wedges. And don't forget a sweater in case it gets cold.

Late afternoon wedding - Again, a dress isn't going to do you wrong. Skip white, black, red (unless it is a Chinese wedding) or gray. Something like this silk dress from DVF would carry you easily from the ceremony to late night dancing. Men should wear a collared shirt, slacks and either a tie or a blazer.

Evening wedding - In general, I don't recommend J.Crew dresses for wedding guests because there is a change you'll look like a rogue bridesmaid. But something like this lovely silk sheath in peacock with classic black pumps would be perfect for a basic evening wedding. Men should wear a suit.

Winter wedding - Go with a dress that has a bit of a darker color and pair it with tights and a light colored good coat.

Urban wedding - In a loft, public park or rooftop. This is the only time I would give someone the seal of approval to wear black. Even then, it's sort of a cop-out. Go for a modern design in steel satin to stand out from the crowd. Men should wear a modern tailored suit.

Formal wedding - This is always a stumper because we don't really have a lot of formal weddings in California. Even celebs here tend to get married in the afternoon outdoors. Unless you know that the event is going to be very formal, you probably don't need a floor length gown. I think a rule of thumb is if your S.O. has to rent a tux, you might want to go with a long gown. Otherwise, pick a glam short cocktail dress in an age appropriate cut for most occasions.

In general, you should always try to wear a pretty color to a wedding. It will look great on you and in the photos. A dress is always the right choice. Go from more coverage to less coverage as a wedding gets later in the evening.

I have seen this bird everywhere and I want it!

This is a great gift and I gave a similar gift at a Gift Exchange two years ago and the gift was fought over ( a true sign that it was a great gift) - this year at the annual Book Club Gift Exchange I gave a print by a SCAD artist and ended up getting it back and framing it...then I gave an ACME pen that looks like a pencil and no one knew what it was! I may resort back to my magnet gift instead after last year's failures. (Side note: I consider myself a great gift giver but everyone messes up).

The best part about this cute little bird, "The colorful Magnetic Birdie keeps paperclips at your fingertips, and when you attach a clip, or take one off, it chirps a happy song."

Baby Shower

So I spoke about the Baby Shower I hosted for Mrs. S many posts ago - well it was this past Saturday and I could not have asked for better weather and wonderful guests.

Here are a few pictures from the shower that my good friend Jessica took. Check out her blog here.

The theme was chic, modern jungle. We used bright yellows and a soft green with cream colors. Everyone took home a glass baby bottle filled with Lemon Jelly Bellies and a jungle motif cookie done by my talented friend Lyndsy (she also did the cake).

More pics to come, but here is a sampling.

Overall I was very pleased and I think the mom-to-be was too!

Outdoor Light Bulb

So Mr. tiara and I have decided after the bathroom is redone and the hall closet has doors we are done sinking lots of dough into our home (except for the little stuff like new paint in my office/studio and painting the carport and itty bitty lania).

However, I have wanted to do a back patio in the backyard to put our outdoor furniture on.

Well look here! I found it on the girl meets glamour blog. Great blog Kate.

Well I think the rock is a great idea. It is Florida friendly and not very labor intensive.

I have been doing Hot Yoga and this proves to me that your strength is beyond what you think.

I am loving hot yoga and think it is the perfect mix of strength, form and STRETCHING!

Ms. B always comments when she speaks with me on the phone she can hear birds. It is true...I must have many birds living around my house. So maybe I should get a bird feeder. I was scouring the blogs and found {this is glamorous} (a gorgeous blog) and just fell in love with the J Schatz Egg Bird Feeder.

I must get it in pink! It comes in many colors, but this would be a great gift for a new homeowner or the bird lover in your life.

Whistle While You Work

So it has been a long week...a long one. Many deadlines, many things to do, construction in my home.

I finally found a lawn guy since Mr. Tiara is taking a big test for the future of his career and he has to study, study, study - so he has no time to mow, hedge, weed, and with my allergies - I just can't do it without feeling like I rolled in a pile of pollen after. So, a lawn service was needed.

We also put a new back door on the house, which actually is attached to my office, so I had a handyman working while I was working (can be challenging) - but in the end, it looks great. Pictures to come.

Now, on to my Friday find. So, I had a roommate in college who had to have a whistle with her at all times because her dad said so. So, she had a Tiffany whistle keychain. Super cute and easy to carry around.

I was browsing Fred Flare and found this whistle necklace. So cute and a better price - and it is actually gold plated. For the girl who needs a whistle in your life - here you go.

P.S. I wonder if Tiffany makes a silver pepper spray?

The woman who defies a simple label — Angelou has been a memoirist, poet, civil rights activist, actress, director, professor, singer and dancer — is getting an early birthday gift.

Two longtime friends and her niece, who is Angelou's archivist, have collaborated on an illustrated book, Maya Angelou: A Glorious Celebration (Doubleday, $30), a tribute and scrapbook, that will be published Tuesday.

On her birthday, April 4, she'll be treated to a party thrown by one of her best friends, Oprah Winfrey, who tends to think big. When Angelou turned 70, Winfrey hosted a week-long Caribbean cruise for 150 of Angelou's friends.

If Angelou knows what's planned next week, she's not talking. Neither is Winfrey, who wrote a foreword to the new book. Angelou's niece, Rosa Johnson Butler, says all she knows is the party is in Florida, is top secret and "will be magnificent."

Butler says, "When we went on the cruise (in 1998), word got out, and there were crowds and helicopters and all. Dr. A is a celebrity, but she doesn't like that sort of thing."

What she does like is to be called Dr. Angelou. Although she never went to college, she has been awarded more than 30 honorary degrees. Since 1981, she has been a professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.

She's an American study herself. "I created myself," she says. "I have taught myself so much."

She was raised by her grandmother, "the greatest person I ever met," in racially segregated Stamps, Ark. She has written about being raped at 7 and becoming an unwed mother at 17, and about the friends who changed her life, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and James Baldwin, whom she knew as "Jimmy."

Now, she's a great-grandmother. She has an 18-room house in Winston-Salem and two town houses in Harlem, black America's unofficial capital, which is enjoying a real estate renaissance. One she rents out, the other she uses as an urban getaway, perfect for dinner parties.

"The people have taken Harlem back," she says. "I see a flowerbox in a window, and that tells me, 'Someone is house-proud.' "

Famous friends

Her 12-room town house, which she gutted and restored four years ago, is filled with art she collected in Africa and works by African-American artists Phoebe Beasley and Romare Bearden. In her parlor is a 4-by-7-foot quilt by Faith Ringgold, commissioned for Angelou's 60th birthday by Winfrey.

Angelou's birth date coincides with the anniversary of King's assassination in 1968. For years she didn't celebrate her birthday. She and King's widow, Coretta Scott King, who died in 2006, would "meet or talk or send each other flowers" on April 4. Each year, she continues to say a birthday prayer, "a prayer for the country."

Angelou met Winfrey about 30 years ago in Baltimore when Winfrey was a local TV anchor begging for a five-minute interview.

In the tribute book, compiled by Butler, Marcia Ann Gillespie, the former editor of Essence and Ms., and Richard Long, a historian at Emory University in Atlanta, Winfrey describes that first encounter:

"I was careful not to take a second more than I asked for. At the end of the five minutes, she inquired with a quizzical smile, 'Who are you, girl?' "

Angelou remembers Winfrey "really listened, and we had a real conversation."

Later, after Winfrey moved to Chicago in 1984, Angelou happened to see her there on the street. She walked up and said, "Hello, Oprah Winfrey."

Angelou says, "She couldn't believe I remembered her name." Angelou invited Winfrey for a weekend at her North Carolina home. They've been friends ever since.

In 1997, Winfrey chose Angelou's The Heart of a Woman, the fourth of her six memoirs, for her book club. They discussed it at a televised pajama party.

They both call their relationship a "sister-mother-daughter friendship."

Angelou had only one child, a son (writer Guy Johnson, 62), "but she treats me and Oprah as the daughters she never had," Butler says.

A life of wonder

Angelou and Winfrey, 54, have gone separate ways in the Democratic presidential campaign. Winfrey drew large crowds when she campaigned for Barack Obama. Angelou has done radio ads and online videos for Hillary Clinton.

Angelou says their political differences haven't affected their friendship: "We've laughed about it. I told her someone complained, 'Our queen isn't backing Obama.' " (Some blacks think of Angelou as a kind of uncrowned royalty.)

Angelou says she has admired Clinton since the early '80s when she was the young wife of the young governor of Arkansas. She has met Obama once, briefly in Washington, D.C.

"I grew up in Arkansas," she says. "I know what it was like. Mean and hopeless. I know how hard the Clintons worked to change all that."

After he was elected president in 1992, Bill Clinton asked Angelou to write and deliver an inaugural poem — something that hadn't been done since Robert Frost played that role for President Kennedy in 1961.

Angelou doesn't question or criticize Obama.

His speech in Philadelphia last week was "brilliant," she says. "The best speech I've ever heard on race relations in the U.S. The problems and answers. What we've learned and haven't learned."

She sidesteps a question about the Democrats' choice between a woman and a black man. "The question is: Who's the best person to be president?" And that Obama and Clinton "are going toe-to-toe, I think it's wonderful."

Angelou, who is 6 feet tall, relies on a cane and is unsteady on her feet.

But her favorite word remains "joy." When she signs her books — she has written 31, poetry, children's and even one cookbook — she adds in artfully old-fashioned penmanship, "Joy!"

She talks about her life in quiet exclamations: "I've conducted the Boston Pops! Imagine that! Me! Maya Angelou! I've sang and danced at La Scala!"

She could go on, but doesn't, merely shakes her head at the wonder of it all.

Her first and best-known book, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, describes how, at 7, she was raped by her mother's boyfriend, who was then murdered by her uncles. Angelou felt responsible and stopped talking to anyone but her brother for five years.

Work and play

Nearly 70 years later, she recalls what her grandmother said about her silence: " 'Sister' — she called me sister — 'Momma don't care what other people say about you. Momma knows when you and the Lord are ready, you goin' to be a teacher.' "

Now, she adds, "I'm not a writer who teaches. I'm a teacher who writes. But I had to work at Wake Forest to know that."

She describes the joy she finds in a classroom: "I see all those little faces and big eyes. Black and white. They look like sparrows in the nest. They look up, with their mouths wide open, and I try to drop in everything I know."

She has no plans to retire. She teaches one course each semester at Wake Forest. (Currently it's World Poetry and Drama Performance.) She composed a poem for the Summer Olympics, is working on a collection of essays, and hosts a weekly satellite radio show on the Oprah & Friends channel.

She writes on yellow legal pads and says that even after all these years, a clean sheet of paper scares and thrills her: "I see a yellow pad, and my knees get weak, and I salivate. I know that sounds like coyness, but I have less coyness than modesty, and I have none of that." She laughs.

After eight decades, any regrets?

"Oh, yeah," she says, drawing out yeah, as if it were four syllables.

"Regret is a very strong word. I hate it. But I wish I had more time. I would have liked to spend six months on a Greek island, living with the people, laughing and singing and dancing."

But "I work all the time. I don't know how not to work. I'm not complaining. I play hard, too."

All over the blog world people write about Keep Calm LTD, and I do not blame them.

They are awesome and have great prints with a touch of humor, sass and fun.

I do have baby showers on the brain (not babies) as I am a host for Mrs. S's Baby Shower! Yea! She is having a boy and we are doing a jungle theme, but as I have said before - in a modern, chic way.

Save Polaroid. Save the World.

As I student of photography - I studied photography for eight years traditionally and sometimes consider myself a photographer. I came across this site through Perfectbound's blog.

I am so sad to hear this,"On February 8, 2008 Polaroid Corporation announced that it will discontinue production of the instant film that made the company a household name. This site will document the aftermath of this announcement and will serve as a home-base for the effort to convince another company to take over and begin producing the cherished technology that Polaroid has abandoned."

What Can You Do?
1. Join the flickr group. Upload your photo and a description of what Polaroid film means to you.
2. Download the Action Pack. It contains pre-addresed postcards to send to Polaroid, Ilford and Fuji with information about why Polaroid should license manufacturing rights to other companies. It also has flyers and other media to distribute to camera shops, film labs or anywhere else.
3. Write to Ilford and Fuji (or any other potential manufacturer) yourself. Nothing will convince a company to produce something more than the knowledge that there is a large market for it. Here are their addresses.
4. Sign the petitions.

I am in ATL for work until Friday and hope to make a stop at one of my favorite stores, SCAD. They have a great collection of handmade goods and an awesome on-line store.

There are so many great stores in Atlanta, and I wish I would have time to visit them all.
